Join us for a generative group writing session! Come away with new material inspired by writing prompts led by Livia Meneghin. Participants will be given a series of prompts, each followed by time to write silently while in community with other writers. All participants will receive:
- a PDF of additional prompts for future writing
- a surprise chapbook, mailed to your address
Workshop Description
When can a direct address in a poem feel like an intimate gift? A risk? An alienation of a reader? An invitation in?
As poets, we engage our readers through specificity. We write for and to very real people, often addressing them directly in our poems. We also may want to protect an addressee’s identity, or may want our writing to exist in a more genre fluid space by hiding or warping factual detail.
In this generative workshop, we will consider the power of naming, and the risks that come with shout outs. Through play and prompts, we will explore the opportunities and limitations of labels and name-dropping via redactions, using initials, and other imaginative possibilities.
We will discuss examples and draw wisdom from writers such as Tiana Clark, Joy Harjo, Patrycja Humienik, and more.
Workshop Leader
Livia Meneghin (she/her) is the author of two chapbooks: feathering and Honey in My Hair. She is Cofounder and Managing Editor at Two Cardinals Literary. At Sundress Publications, she serves as Assistant Chapbook Editor. Livia has been awarded recognition from the Academy of American Poets, Breakwater Review, The Room Magazine, the City of Boston, and elsewhere. Since earning her MFA in poetry, she teaches writing and literature at the collegiate level. She is a cancer survivor.
